PET FOSTER FAQ'sWhat are the requirements to be a Foster Family?
All Foster Families must submit a Foster Application. Will the pets be current on shots and spayed or neutered?
Foster pets will be current on their shots before being placed with a Foster Family. Some pets may not be spayed or neutered when they come to Pause4Paws for foster care. We work with Spay Oklahoma and local veterinarians to provide spaying/neutering to all foster pets before they are returned to their owner. We will arrange transportation with Foster Families and other volunteers. |
How long will I be fostering an animal?
Pause4Paws provides short-term care for pets of individuals in need so that they can receive available short-term medical, mental health or addiction treatment. The pet owner and the agency helping them specify a time period for up to 30 days, or in certain limited circumstances, up to 60 days. Unlike most other pet foster organizations, you can care for a pet in need without undertaking a long term commitment. You will also be providing peace of mind to a loving pet parent. How do I prepare my home to be an Animal Foster Home? Pet-proofing a home is important for new Foster Families. Check your yards and fences to be sure that the pet cannot escape through a hole, loose board, or under a fence. Check that your house plants are not poisonous to animals, or move them out of reach. Keep medications and chemicals on high shelves or in latched cabinets. Cover trash cans. Block any small spaces, nooks, or holes in walls, cabinets, or behind your washer/dryer. Put shoes, laundry, string/craft items, and children’s toys behind cabinet doors. Make sure all cords are out of the pet’s reach, or have a cord cover. If you have stairs, consider a pet gate to prevent falls or unwanted excursions. Finally, if you are fostering a dog with a large tail or a cat, consider putting fragile knick-knacks away so they are not knocked over. Can I choose the type of animal I would like to foster? YES. We work with the Foster Family’s preferences. |

How do I qualify to foster my pet(s)?
Pause4Paws foster services are limited to pet owners who have been referred by an approved agency or organization that helps individuals experiencing homelessness, mental illness, or addiction receive necessary emergency services that they wouldn’t otherwise receive. Talk to your intake person or service provider if you need temporary assistance with your pet while receiving these services. Will I get my pet(s) back? YES! In fact, in order to qualify for our program, you must sign a statement saying that you will take your pet back. We are not a pet adoption organization. Our role is to care for your pet, as if it were our own, until you are out of the hospital or treatment center and then return your pet promptly to you! |
